Understanding chronic dry eye
Chronic dry eye happens when your eyes do not make enough tears, or when the tears you produce evaporate too quickly to keep the surface of the eye comfortable. Common symptoms include burning or stinging, redness, a gritty or foreign-body sensation, blurred vision that clears when you blink, light sensitivity, and — surprisingly — episodes of watery, reflex tearing. Everyday triggers can include long hours at screens, contact lens wear, dry or windy environments, aging and hormonal changes, certain medications, and underlying conditions such as Sjögren's syndrome or other autoimmune disorders.
A manageable condition
For many people, chronic dry eye is a manageable, long-term condition rather than something that has to be endured. Depending on the cause and severity, a provider may suggest options ranging from artificial tears and lifestyle adjustments to prescription anti-inflammatory drops or plasma-based (autologous serum) eye drops made from a sample of your own blood. Each approach works differently, and what helps one person may not be the right fit for another.
What to expect from your assessment
This online assessment asks about your symptoms, history, and prior treatments so a licensed provider can understand your situation and determine whether a treatment may be appropriate for you. It is educational and does not replace an in-person eye exam. If you have sudden vision changes, eye pain, or injury, please seek care from an eye doctor or urgent care promptly.
